We sat and watched the two pet gerbils run
Free between the garden gate and our chairs
While we kept an eye out for the roadrunner
Who sometimes crossed the yard and who
Had been known to take a keen interest
In the little rodents at least once before.
It’s not always the trickster, Coyote, who is
The opportunistic carnivore. Ever since life,
An opportunistic world, even if never before.
