Three A.M. Snapshots, Saint George, Utah, 25 August 2018

You might experience this moment
As continuous. You might wake up at three
In the morning of the day in question
And read a seamlessly unscrolling darkness
Spangled with all the well-fueled little lights
Above and below and beyond as one
Hendiadys. But it won’t be, it wasn’t, it
Never is. Attention is too precious to spend
On continuity. The mind needs to jump
Between states of awareness to have any
Hope of sampling enough incoming
Universe to persist. If you weren’t so
Distractable, you’d much more quickly cease
To exist. Blink freely and allow your neck
To twist. The world a winking window is.
